OBJECTIVES:

·

The primary objective of this course is to meet a need to increase capacity and understanding of environmental management, and more specifically the environmental impact assessment process.

·

Local case studies will be used to bring important points across, and presenters will mainly be Eastern Cape experts in their respective fields.

·

In this course, we will specifically focus on and clearly explain the theory and practice of EIA, and how this relates to the new EIA regulations promulgated in terms of Section 24(5) of the National Environmental Management Act (Act 107 of 1998).

Course Overview

The course will introduce you to the field of environmental management by focusing on the procedures for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Integrated Environmental Management (IEM). Emphasis is therefore placed on the study of human impacts on the environment, and how to evaluate the importance of these impacts and regulate their effects, using EIA as the management tool. On completion of the course, participants should understand and be able to answer the following:

 
  • ·What is environmental science and environmental management?
  • ·What is an environmental impact assessment?
  • ·How does one undertake an environmental impact assessment?
  • ·What are the different stages through which an EIA goes?
  • ·What is the current status of EIA in South Africa?
  • ·What are the implications of the new EIA regulations?
  • ·What are the challenges facing EIA in Africa?
  • ·What is integrated environmental management?
  • ·What is public scoping and public participation?
  • ·How does one undertake a public participation programme?
  • ·What is social impact assessment?
  • ·What principles should be observed when making environmental decisions?
  • · What makes a good EIA?

Course Structure

The course will be run over a 5-day period, from Mon 9 - Fri 13 May 2011. The course will consist of lectures, tutorials, practicals and workshops.

 

The group will be split into smaller work parties to tackle particular examples presented in the course, which will help to develop problem-solving skills, as well as increasing the understanding of Environmental Management.

 

A range of delegates from all walks of life, which will enrich the learning experience.  The course will be intensive, with lectures and tutorials running from 08h00 to 17h00, with additional individual tasks set for two evenings.

 

Registration on Monday 9 May is at 8:30 and the course will end at 12:30 on Friday 13 May; Friday lunch is from 12:30-13:30, please book flights accordingly, considering the travel time between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown estimated at 1.5h.
 

Please note that delegates will be required to complete a post-course written assignment to qualify for a Rhodes University certificate of competence, otherwise a certificate of attendance will be issued.

Undergraduate degree / diploma

OR matric + relevant working experience.

Flights to Port Elizabeth Airport (nearest airport) is recommended for arrival Sunday 8 May and Departure Friday 13 May no earlier than 4pm.
Transport between Port Elizabeth airport
and Grahamstown (130km one way), evening meals, and accommodation in Grahamstown is for your cost.
