THE PROPOSED SANRAL EDENDALE QUARRY, MATATIELE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, EASTERN CAPE PROVINCE OF SOUTH AFRICA

FINAL BASIC ASSESSMENT REPORT SANRAL EDENDALE MATATIELE QUARRY

Activity: SANRAL is in the process of upgrading Section 8 of the R56, which passes by the Edendale Quarry.  The road upgrade requires the provision of weathered gravel (sandstone) to be used as fill material and selected layer works for the road.  The area adjacent to the existing privately owned quarry consists of the material required (i.e. weathered gravel) and as such would provide a reliable source for the road upgrade.  It is noted that the existing quarry is a dolerite mine (dolerite outcrop) and as such only provides hard rock and not the weathered gravel that SANRAL requires.

Location: The quarry is situated in the Matatiele Local Municipality, adjacent to the R56, approximately 12 km from Matatiele in the west and 13 km from Cedarville in the east, on the farm 185, Edendale, Matatiele in the Eastern Cape Province.
