Public Participation or Stakeholder Engagement processes are a critical component of Environmental Impact Assessments and other processes, and are required by South African laws which recognize the legal right of citizens to participate in decision making processes that affect them.

One of the central motivations behind stakeholder engagement is to ensure that the decisions made by the Environmental Authorities are informed, considered, balanced and generally acceptable, and thus ensure sustainability. Stakeholder engagement also ensures greater public understanding and helps to build legitimacy and public support for decisions.

We have conducted stakeholder engagement programmes for EIAs ranging from small scoping studies to large mining developments, as well as for strategic assessment and planning processes. The nature of CES’s engagement processes varies depending on the local context and the nature of the proposed development. Computer databases are used by CES to capture, organize and report on the stakeholders and their views and comments during the whole stakeholder engagement process. These views and comments are presented in CES’s reports along with an informed analysis of the stakeholders and their views.
