Basic Assessments are required for all activities listed in terms of NEMA. They require investigation as well as a public participation process in order to allow the competent authority to make an informed decision.

Generally Basic assessments do not need in-depth specialist studies, but include an informed assessment of the environmental attributes of the area under consideration, an analysis of the likely impacts that the proposed development may have, and suggested mitigation measures to reduce any impacts.

CES have undertaken numerous Basic Assessments in South Africa. We have always been able to indicate to clients where their development aspirations would not be approved by the competent authorities without mitigation. CES can assist with the application process and by recommending mitigation measures for a range of developments requiring a Basic assessment.
