There is an increasing link between financial performance and environmental management and related risk. This link is driven by various developments, including:

  • More stringent environmental regulations and enforcement

  • Greater public awareness and dissemination of information (the so-called CNN World)

  • Greater value attached to corporate image and “license to operate”

  • Society’s demand for greater corporate social responsibility, including environmental.

  • Significant growth in socially responsible investment (SRI)

There is often a disconnect between environmental and financial management. Financial managers typically do not appreciate the risks and financial implications associated with poor or reactive environmental management, while environmental managers do not always fully appreciate the economic imperatives that determine the viability of a corporation or other business entity.

The integrated environmental and financial service offered by CES assists in bridging the link between environmental and financial management. Alan Carter holds a PhD in environmental science and is a Certified Public Accountant in the USA (licensed in Texas) with over 10 years of environmental finance and accounting experience with large international corporations both in South Africa and in the USA.

His experience has included:

  • Eight years experience with Big Four accounting firms in South Africa and in the USA

  • Worked as a data analyst on the London Stock Exchange.

  • Managed financial audits for numerous private and listed companies both in South Africa and in the USA.

  • Evaluated and verified the environmental assets and liabilities for financial reporting purposes in terms of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (GAAP) for large multinational companies

  • Involved in the determination of the historical cost element of environmental remediation insurance claims for a number of large multinational companies.

  • Evaluated the environmental budgeting process for the US Army and provided best practice guidance for improving the process.

  • Determined financial feasibility for a number of development proposals

  • Presented a number of papers on issues relating to environmental finance and accounting
