CES has considerable experience in the following
fields, gained from a diverse range of projects:
WHY YOU NEED CES!
EIA, EMP, SEA,
EMPR … Which one do I need in South Africa or
Africa, and how do I get IFC or World Bank funding ?
These are just some of the question facing many
developers and proponents of large scale projects,
and even the designated authorities.
We can assist you to navigate the legal and
institutional environmental requirements of your
project. Essentially it’s a matter of scale, the
bigger the development, the more complex the
specialist studies and EIA become. Often, smaller
developments only require a Basic Assessment (BA)
but a larger project, such as a resort complex or
heavy mineral mine will require a full EIA and an
Environmental Management Plan (EMP), which is
presented to the Environmental Authority for
authorisation.
Since CES has considerable expertise in-house, we
are also able to take on pre-feasibility
environmental assessments, as well Strategic
Environmental Assessments, which contribute to
pro-active decision making and environmental
planning. Our SEA’s assist local municipal
authorities with the preparation of their Integrated
Development Plans and Spatial Development Plans. We
are also able to assist with State of Environment
Reports, all of which are legal requirements for
local authorities.
These EIAs and related studies require a significant
amount of intellectual input, but CES has a
reputation of bankable performance. We are here to
assist you in duiding your project towards
sustainability, by ensuring it meets or exceeds the
required domestic and/or international standards.
Many firms appoint CES because they are confident
that we will deliver a report that meets
international standards.

“The Chibuto EIA represents the culmination of a
long complex multidisciplinary study. New standards
were set – the integration of biophysical, social
and regional planning issues is arguably the most
significant of them, which will set a new benchmark
for studies elsewhere in the world. The credit for
this work lies largely with the CES team in
Grahamstown.” |

“Coastal & Environmental Services prepared an
Environmental Impact Assessment on behalf of Kenmare
Resources Plc in accordance with World Bank
Guidelines. The study covered all environmental
issues including various baseline studies, a
socio-economic assessment and a conceptual
resettlement plan. In our opinion the EIA was
performed to a high standard; this message was also
relayed to us during our discussions with the
development funding institutions we are dealing
with. Kenmare is planning to employ CES to undertake
an Environmental Management Plan as the project
advances to the next stage.” |
