SOCIAL INTERESTS

Social Impact Assessments (SIA) in South Africa are an integral part of the EIA process. The SIA study aims to describe the social environment in which the proposed project will take place, and predict the magnitude and significance of social changes that the project will bring about. The SIA then makes recommendations for the mitigation of negative impacts and for the optimisation of positive impacts. The SIA is generally undertaken in close collaboration with the public involvement aspects of the EIA. In many instances the SIA results in the preparation of a social management plan that sometimes includes a resettlement plan.

CES has undertaken numerous SIA studies for a range of projects, including heavy minerals mines, power lines, industrial zones, tourist resorts, housing estates, road and rail routes as well as the proposed expansion of a national park.

CES and their associates have a range of sociological expertise that includes:
• Socio-economic literature and database searches
• Baseline socio-economic surveys, database construction and analysis
• Implementation of qualitative research methods
• Drawing up Resettlement and other Social Management Plans
• Community engagement and involvement
• Participatory community based research, monitoring and evaluation
