Social
Impact Assessments (SIA) in South Africa are an
integral part of the EIA process. The SIA study aims
to describe the social environment in which the
proposed project will take place, and predict the
magnitude and significance of social changes that
the project will bring about. The SIA then makes
recommendations for the mitigation of negative
impacts and for the optimisation of positive
impacts. The SIA is generally undertaken in close
collaboration with the public involvement aspects of
the EIA. In many instances the SIA results in the
preparation of a social management plan that
sometimes includes a resettlement plan.
CES has undertaken numerous SIA studies for a range
of projects, including heavy minerals mines, power
lines, industrial zones, tourist resorts, housing
estates, road and rail routes as well as the
proposed expansion of a national park.
CES and their associates have a range of
sociological expertise that includes:
• Socio-economic literature and database searches
• Baseline socio-economic surveys, database
construction and analysis
• Implementation of qualitative research methods
• Drawing up Resettlement and other Social
Management Plans
• Community engagement and involvement
• Participatory community based research, monitoring
and evaluation
