The proposed Glencore Mine Residue Facilities Extension Project
Coastal & Environmental Services (Pty) Ltd. (hereafter referred to CES) has been appointed by
Glencore Eastern Mines to facilitate the Scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment (S&EIR) Process in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (1998) read with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014 (as amended) as well as the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (2008) for the proposed construction and operation of a Waste Rock Dump at Helena Mine and Waste Storage Facility (Co-disposal) at Thorncliffe Mine.
Furthermore, Glencore Eastern Mines are also applying for a Water Use Licence from Department Water & Sanitation (DWS) for the Helena, Thorncliffe and Magareng mines in terms of the National Water Act (NWA).
The proposed project will include:
Thorncliffe mine:
- New Waste Storage Facility (Site Footprint - 33 ha).
- Associated Pollution Control Dam (Site Footprint -2.7 ha).
- Associated Storm water management infrastructure.
Helena Mine:
- New Waste Rock Dump (Site Footprint -22.3 ha) on the footprint of the existing
- Paste Tailings Storage Facility site.
- Associated Pollution Control Dam (Site Footprint - 1.47 ha).
- Associated Storm water management infrastructure.
