Proposed Latrodex Wind Energy Facility and Overhead Powerline, Marshstrand, Great Kei Local Municipality - Draft Basic Assessment Report for Public Review: DEDEAT Reference number: EC/25/A/LN1/LN3/M/22-12

Latrodex (Pty) Ltd is proposing the construction of a 15MW Wind Energy Facility consisting of 5 (five) x 3 MW turbines to be located near Marshstrand, Great Kei Local Municipality, Eastern Cape. The development includes a 22 kV overhead power line (OHL) connecting the WEF the existing Chaba and Rivermouth Substations. The power generated from the WEF will be used to provide electricity to the existing Wild Coast Abalone facility and excess electricity will be fed into the Eskom grid. The proposed WEF is to be located on the ridge overlooking the existing Wild Coast Abalone Facility. 

According to the EIA regulations (2014, as amended) promulgated under the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) (Act No.107 of 1998; NEMA) the potential impacts on the environment will have to be assessed in terms of the listed activities. The proposed WEF and associated infrastructure trigger listed activities in terms of the NEMA EIA Regulations (2014, as amended) as per Listing Notices 1, and 3, and as such require a Basic Assessment process to be undertaken in accordance with Regulation 6 of the EIA Regulations (2014, as amended). The competent authority for this application will be the provincial Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT).  CES has been appointed to undertake the Basic Assessment process on behalf of the Applicant.
