SANRAL SMEC Environmental Authorisation for the Mining of Borrow Pits and Quarries between Zandkraal and Winburg South, Free State
South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd. (SANRAL) requires 15 borrow pits and 2 hard rock quarries for the construction of various safety improvements on Section 16 of N1, from Zandkraal (km 33.8) to Winburg (km 78.0), in Masilonyana Local Municipality, in the Free State Province. SANRAL is exempted from the application of a Mining Right/Permit for the borrow pits but they are not exempted from the application for Environmental Authorisation for the mining sites. In terms of the EIA Regulations, the proposed development will require a full scoping and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). SANRAL has appointed CES to undertake the EIA process.
Please be advised that the Draft EIA Report is available for public review and comment. The 30-day review period is from 15 March – 14 April 2021. Please ensure that any comments reach us on or before 14 April 2021.
