Dr Ted Avis, Managing Director, is a leading expert in the field of Environmental Impact Assessments, having project-managed numerous large-scale EIAs to international standards (e.g. World Bank and International Finance Corporation). Ted has also project managed and provided professional input to the State of Environment reports and Strategic Environmental Assessments produced by CES.

Prof Roy Lubke, is a retired Associate Professor in the Department of Botany, Rhodes University, and Director of Coastal & Environmental Services. He contributed to the preparation of the SA Association of Botanists vegetation map by mapping the vegetation in a large part of the Eastern Cape. Professor Lubke has been involved in numerous EIAs and has extensive experience in ecological and vegetation studies and the identification of indicators for SoERs.

Dr Alan Carter, Senior Consultant and Director of the East London Office, has extensive training and experience in both financial accounting and environmental science disciplines with international accounting firms in South Africa and the USA. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and holds a PhD in Plant Sciences. He is also a certified ISO14001 EMS auditor with the American National Standards Institute and the British Standards Institute.

Mr Bill Rowlston, Director, has more than 35 years experience in the English and South African water sectors. He spent 24 years with the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry in Pretoria, where he contributed to the development of approaches for protecting water resources, including the determination of the ecological Reserve. Bill was closely involved with the development of the National Water Policy (1997) and the National Water Act (1998), and was responsible for compiling the National Water Resource Strategy, First Edition (2005), much of which he wrote. He also supervised the development of guidelines for the preparation of sub-national catchment management strategies. He joined CES in April 2007.

Dr Kevin Whittington-Jones, Director, holds an MSc in Marine Ecology and a PhD in Environmental Biotechnology. Prior to joining CES full time, he held a number of academic posts at Rhodes University. The most recent of these was Senior Lecturer in the Rhodes Investec Business School where he was responsible for the development and coordination of the environmental management electives of the Rhodes MBA programme. His areas of expertise include integrated pollution and waste management, sanitation, waste water treatment, industrial environmental management and environmental business risk.

 Mr Marc Hardy, Principal Environmental Consultant; holds a M. Phil in Environmental Management from the University of Stellenbosch’s School of Public Management and Planning. His professional interests include environmental impact reporting for linear, energy and large infrastructure projects, strategic environmental policy development and reporting – mostly relating to Environmental Management Framework’s (EMF’s) - compliance monitoring and environmental auditing. Before entering the consulting field he gained extensive experience of environmental management and regulatory processes whilst in the employ of the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, being responsible for the review of projects like the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link and representing the Department on various EMF, SDF and IDP project steering committees. He has project managed several large infrastructure EIA processes as a consultant in Johannesburg prior to joining CES, and is currently tasked with managing various wind energy and biofuel projects throughout Africa.

 Mr Lungisa Bosman, Environmental Consultant, holds a Bachelor of Social Science (1993) from UCT, with majors in Public Administration & Sociology, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Organisation and Management. Lungisa has gained considerable experience in social facilitation and community education and has been involved in a number of projects where he has brought his facilitation skills to bear. These include the ADM and Chris Hani State of Environment studies.

Dr Greer Hawley, Senior Environmental Consultant, has a BSc degree in Botany and Zoology and a BSc Honours in Botany from the University of Cape Town. She completed her PhD thesis (Microbiology) at Rhodes University. Greer has been involved in a number of diverse activities. The core academic focus has been directed in the field of taxonomy both in the plant and fungal kingdom. Greer’s research ranges from studying fresh and marine algae, estuarine diatoms, Restio species classification in the fynbos and forest vegetation and fungal species identification and ecology. Greer’s study of fungi have also contributed towards an understanding of soil ecology and “below ground” ecology. She is currently working on numerous impact assessments at the East London branch.

Mr Nic Davenport, Environmental Consultant, holds an MSc with distinction in Environmental Science from Rhodes University. He majored in Environmental Science and Zoology (B.Sc) and also got a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science. Nic’s experience in the consulting field relates to ecological studies, but also incorporates facilitating sustainable development, public participation and budget management. He has GIS experience (ArcView 3), and his interests include the ecology of indigenous fauna and flora, as well as environmental economics (valuation) and livelihood studies.

Ms Naomi Richardson, has an MSc in Ichthyology and her thesis investigated the use of biomarkers in estuarine health monitoring. She has been involved in marine studies including harbour water and sediment quality monitoring, studies on the impacts of dredge spoil, land reclamation works, moorings and jetties. She has also worked in the freshwater environment, focusing in particular on downstream and cumulative impacts of aquatic pollution. She is fluent in French and has a good command of Spanish.

Ms Leigh-Ann de Wet, Environmental Consultant\Botanical Specialist. Leigh-Ann holds a BSc (Botany and Entomology) as well as a BSc (Hons) and MSc in Botany from Rhodes University.  She conducts vegetation sensitivity assessments, in turn aid to guide developments and thereby minimising their impacts sensitive vegetation.

Dr Cherie-Lynn Mack, holds a PhD and MSc (with distinction) degrees in Environmental Biotechnology, with a BSc degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry.  She has postgraduate research experience in industrial and domestic wastewater treatment technologies, with particular emphasis on the coal and platinum mining industries.  Her interests lie in the water sector, with experience in ecological reserve determination and water quality monitoring and analysis.  She has experience in water quality analysis and industrial wastewater treatment research.  She is currently employed in the East London office of CES as a senior environmental consultant.

Mr Hylton Newcombe, has a BSc degree with majors in general ecology (Zoology), Environmental Science and Ichthyology; and Honours in Ichthyology from Rhodes University and is currently completing his MSc in Fisheries Science from Rhodes University. His Masters thesis, The Contribution Towards the Development of a Management Plan for Tuna in South Africa focused on quantifying and qualifying the size and shape of the tuna sport and baitboat fisheries coupled with biological research in age-growth analysis and genetics for yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares. His interests are focused within a broad range of marine studies, namely biodiversity surveys, jetty EIAs, outfall EIAs, conservation plans and dredging specialist studies.

Ms Sandy van der Waal, Environmental Consultant, completed her BSc Degree in Zoology and Ecology at the University of Cape Town before moving to Rhodes University for her BSc Honours and Masters Degrees in Environmental Science. Her research experience has covered environmental economics, valuating ecosystem services, estuarine management, scenario planning and land use change. Sandy is interested in marine, coastal and estuarine ecology and the management of these systems.

Mr Roy de Kock, Environmental Consultant, holds a BSc in Botany and Geology and a BSc Honours in Geology from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. He is currently completing his MSc thesis in Rehabilitation Ecology with the focus on Mine Rehabilitation. His Masters thesis titled; Bushclump Rehabilitation Within Couga Bontveld After Strip Mining focused on rehabilitation of mined Bontveld vegetation on limestones of the Nanaga Formation where he attempts to recognise the evolutionary path of the present landscape, as well as focussing on primary ecological processes such as hydrology, energy capture and nutrient cycling and the impact of mining on change in diversity and ecosystem health. Currently he is working on numerous impact assessments at the East London branch.

Ms Kate Bezuidenhout, Senior Environmental Consultant at our Grahamstown branch; holds a M.CESM (Corporate Environmental and Sustainability Management) from Monash University, Melbourne. She also has an undergraduate (BA Development and Environment) and honours degree (Hons Public and Development Management) from Stellenbosch University. Kate's experience in the consulting field includes Basic Environmental Assessments, Scoping and full EIA studies (mostly in the integrated waste management sector), Environmental Management Plan Reports for numerous gravel borrowpits in the West Coast District, Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) for waste disposal facilities, waste recycling facilities etc, Construction EMPs for various construction projects relating to roads, structures and municipal systems, Environmental Control Officer Duties and Environmental Awareness Training for numerous construction projects (the biggest being the N7 Potsdam Interchange - Project Value R77m), Integrated Waste Management Plans, including public awareness and education programs, and Corporate Sustainability and Reporting. Kate has four years experience in the environmental engineering industry and has recently returned from Australia after completing her Masters degree.

Ms Natalie O'Neill, Public Participation Consultant, has a Diploma in Game Ranging and Game Farm Management from Damelin College in Durban, South Africa. This involved training in Kruger National Park and Selati Game Reserve with Eco-training. She has her FGASA level 1, is THETA assessed and certified, and is an official DEAT registered South African tour guide. Natalie is a keen horse rider, enjoys birding, fishing, scuba diving and has worked as a horse guide throughout Southern Africa, including the Wild Coast and the Okavango swamps. She has managed lodges in the Free State and Eastern Cape which has lead her to work with South Africans from all walks of life as well as international clients. She is fluent in English and Afrikaans. Natalie’s role at CES is to assist with all aspects of public participation. This includes assisting consultants with all logistics associated with public meetings as well as designing electronic templates for various documents including project reports and background information documents.

Dr Eric Igbinigie, Senior Environmental Consultant; holds a Ph.D and M.Sc in Environmental Biotechnology and B.Sc.Hons in Biochemistry. Eric’s professional interest is in sustainable integrated environmental management with a keen interest in hydrocarbon bioremediation, waste management and valorization, biofuels production and carbon management strategies. Before joining CES he served as a Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Environmental Biotechnology, Rhodes University where he lectured at postgraduate level and lead a research group tasked with beneficiating coal spoils and acid mine drainage treatment. Eric has several peer reviewed publications and a patent. He is a registered environmental practitioner and a member of several international environmental organizations.
