Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) proposes to construct a telecommunication mast and associated infrastructure in an effort to improve the communication channels between train conductors along existing freight rails in Pietermaritzburg and Ashburton in KwaZulu-Natal.
In accordance with the EIA regulations, the proposed development required a Basic Assessment to be undertaken in fulfilment of the Environmental Authorisation application. CES Environmental and Social Advisory Services (CES) was appointed by TFR to undertake the Basic Assessment and manage the associated specialist studies. The final reports were submitted to the National Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) on 16 October 2020 for their consideration and decision on the applications, pending a 107-day decision-making period.
Registered Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) will be notified of the outcome within 14 days of the decision being issued by DEFF.
