Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the
Iron Ore & Manganese Segment Strategy for the Iron Ore Corridor Expansion between Sishen and Saldanha

Transnet has developed a growth and renewal strategy, through the development of Segment Strategies, thereby seeking to move away from a divisional, modal service offering to one of strategic participation and structured collaboration. A reliable, effective freight system is one that enables profitable supply chains, especially with bulk commodities, where Transnet has a significant competitive advantage and delivers value to its clients in this logistics chain. Consequently, Transnet has developed a specific Segment Strategy for Iron Ore and Manganese. The goals of this strategy are to:

  • Create an efficient system that appropriately leverages the strengths of the public and private sectors.
  • Stabilize delivery and support growth in the Iron Ore sector to initially 67 Mtpa and ultimately up to 76 Mtpa.
  • Expand the current 16 Mtpa Manganese export to 22 Mtpa, which includes increasing export through the Port of Saldanha from 5 to 6 Mtpa.

In developing the Iron Ore and Manganese Segment Strategy Transnet wishes to ensure that further development of the strategy is undertaken in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. To this end they appointed a team of specialists to undertake a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the Iron Ore and Manganese Segment Strategy.
