SANRAL proposes to upgrade National Route R516 Section 1 (R516-01), starting from KM 36.67 on the R516, ending at KM 83.80, in the town of Bela Bela at the intersection with Road R101. The project route falls across several farm portions within the Bela Bela Local Municipality in the greater Waterberg District, Limpopo Province.
As per the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations of 2014 (as amended), the SANRAL R516 project requires an Environmental Authorisation, from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) and WUA application to the Department of Human Settlement, Water and Sanitation (DHSWS), respectively. The triggered activities are listed under Listing Notices 1 & 3 (published in Government Notices No. R 983 and No. R 985 respectively), and as such, the BA process needs to be followed.
