RC Stillfontein Solar 2 (Pty) Ltd (the ‘Applicant’), a subsidiary of Cainmani (Pty) Ltd (the ‘Developer’), proposes to develop a 300MW Solar PV Facility (SPVF), inclusive of associated infrastructure, approximately 18 km southeast of Klerksdorp and 35 km southwest of Potchefstroom, located near Stilfontein within the North West Province. The project site is situated in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality (LM) which forms part of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality (DM). The proposed Stillfontein Solar 2 SPVF is situated within the Klerksdorp Renewable Energy Development Zone (REDZ10) which was promulgated in GN R. 840 for large scale wind and solar photovoltaic energy facilities.
The proposed SPVF will encompass a study area of up to 750 hectares and will be used to generate power for offtake by the national Eskom grid. A 132 kV overhead powerline (OHL) will be required to connect the new proposed plant to the Eskom Hermes Substation. The proposed SPVF will include a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), internal gravel roads, a permanent laydown area, a temporary laydown area, an operations and maintenance (O&M) building, an onsite 33/132kV substation and a 132kV OHL of up to 13km in length.
It's important to note that Stillfontein 2 SPVF forms part of the Stillfontein Cluster, which includes Stillfontein 1 SPVF and shared ancillary infrastructure. This ancillary infrastructure is being applied for both application processes as it will be shared.
CES has been appointed by RC Stillfontein Solar 2 (Pty) Ltd as the Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to conduct the necessary Basic Assessment (BA) Process for the project in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA, Act No. 107 of 1998 and subsequent amendments) EIA Regulations (2014 as amended).
