Over the last weekend of June, our senior faunal specialist, Jonathan Balmer, attended the African Snakebite Institute's Venomous Snake Handling Bootcamp at Cradle Moon Lodge in Gauteng. Delegates are taught the basics of several methods to safely handle venomous snakes. This is a skillset often necessary for those in the faunal survey line of work where snakes can be encountered while on the job, as well as while having a relaxing braai after work!
Jonathan had this to say about the course: "It was great getting my hands on some fantastic snakes. Most of my skills have come through time in the field studying these creatures, so I really enjoyed the formal element of the course, and now I have a certificate of handling competency as well! Although I have seen the species all before in the wild, there's just something about getting up close and personal with an animal that I really enjoy. Huge thanks to ASI for the course, which was well compiled and expertly presented. I would recommend their courses to anyone spending a lot of time out in the bush or with an interest in reptiles and other animals."
The African Snakebite Institute is the leading training provider of snake awareness, first aid, and handling courses in Africa. Visit their website at www.africansnakebiteinstitute.com for more information on courses, equipment. and reptiles in general.
